VIRGINIA
In Virginia, children and youth must attend school if they are 5 years old by September 30 and under 18. At registration, a parent or guardian must be present and provide proof of address, the child’s birth certificate, Social Security number, and a physical exam report, including a tuberculin skin test for new students. For kindergartners, the exam must be within the past 12 months. Required vaccinations include DPT, polio, measles, rubella, and mumps.

Charter schools provide diverse options for parents and students, enabling communities and educators to develop innovative instructional programs that can be adapted and implemented across the public school system. All charter schools are nonsectarian public schools operating within a specific school division and governed by the local school board.
