Public Education System

VIRGINIA
In Virginia, children and youth must attend school if they are 5 years old by September 30 and under 18. At registration, a parent or guardian must be present and provide proof of address, the child’s birth certificate, Social Security number, and a physical exam report, including a tuberculin skin test for new students. For kindergartners, the exam must be within the past 12 months. Required vaccinations include DPT, polio, measles, rubella, and mumps. For more details or specific questions, contact:

NORTH CAROLINA

To register for kindergarten in North Carolina, students must be at least five years old by October 16, and for first grade, at least six years old by the same date. Required documents include proof of residency, the child’s certified birth certificate and Social Security number, and a health assessment signed by a physician, including a physical exam, vision, and hearing screenings. North Carolina law mandates immunizations for DTP, polio, measles, mumps, rubella, hepatitis B, and Hib for children born after October 1, 1988. Immunization records must include the child’s name, birthdate, sex, and parent or guardian contact information. Students cannot attend classes without complete immunization records. Private Schools

Parochial and independent private schools are in operation throughout the state, serving students from preschool through 12th grade. Charter Schools
